Tagalog word for free?

Be careful. Whereas the Spanish word for 'free' (no payment) is gratis, the Filipino word is libre.

For example:

Libre ba ito?
Is this free?

Oo, libre ito.
Yes, this is free.

Hindi. Hindi ito libre.
No. This is not free.

To say you're independent, use the adjective malaya.

Malaya ako.
I am free.
